Big Boss Man
Location : 36 Broad Street Road Maidens, VA 23103.

Saturday, July 31st from 8 am to Noon is Overall Day at the Goochland Farmers Market. We encourage kids of all ages to come out dressed in their favorite overalls. You’ll be glad you have them on when you’re Mutton Bustin (trying to hang onto an ornery sheep is no easy thing) and participating in the Greased Pig Catching Contest! You’ll also need them as you help the Goochland Fire Dept. put out the fire in their burning house. And sometimes the seeds from the Watermelon Spitting Contest don’t go exactly where they should, so it’s best to be covered up. Another good reason for overalls is when you’re exploring compost layering, flat painting and seed starting with the Backyard Farmers (they’ll have some info for the grown-ups, too).

After all that activity it’ll be nice to head over to Storyland – local dentist Dr. Peter Murchie presents Read Aloud Virginia’s StoryLand to kick off his Children’s Book Drive and promote children’s literacy. There will be literary characters, story time, and a table set up for children to color their favorite books. These drawings are sent to CBS Ch.6 and they may be chosen to air in their morning news program "Virginia This Morning"! At 10:15am Dr. Murchie will entertain children with a special Smiles for Life Story Time. Parents are encouraged to drop off their gently-used children’s books to kick start the August book drive. For more information on the book drive please go to www.GoochlandDentistry.com and click on “Special Events”.

Don’t forget to shop at our Kid Vendor booths under the big tent, as well as all of our regular market vendors. Music will be provided by Harper & Friends. The market is held at Historic Grace Church, 2955 River Road West, Goochland, VA 23063. For more info go to www.GoochlandMarket.org.

Location : 2955 River Road West Goochland, VA 23063 .

Visionary Goochland
The Center for Rural Culture

The Center for Rural Culture is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization whose mission is to educate, promote and inspire members of our community to sustain a culture that supports agriculture and the local economy, protects natural and historic resources, and maintains our rural character and traditions. Since 2004, we have been working hard to provide the members of our community with quality programs that serve to sustain our rural culture. As founders of the popular Goochland Farmers Market and now a licensee for an online Farm to Family Co-op Program through Lulus Local Food, we have helped to keep valuable agricultural land in use by providing a means for farmers to sell fresh, local, seasonal food and other land based products. We serve as a conduit for handing down the history, stories, music and lifestyles related to a rich, rural culture and have helped to cultivate our local roots.

We also offer classes, workshops, movies, panel discussions, seminars and forums relating to land and water conservation, smart growth, sustainable agriculture and issues relating to our local food system. Please contact us if you are interested in sponsoring or attending a CRC event.

The Center for Rural Culture serves as the umbrella organization for the Richmond Area Buy Fresh, Buy Local Chapter. We are also actively involved in supporting our community’s tourism and economic development through our popular Discover Goochland website.

Our choices make a difference every day. Please choose to sustain your community’s rural culture and make a difference through an annual membership with the Center for Rural Culture.
